England pacer Mark Wood on Wednesday expressed disappointment over his exclusion from the recently concluded ENG vs SA T20I series. The pacer has been named in the One Day International squad slated to begin Friday.
England has named the same squad for the ODI series and also included Mark Wood, Moeen Ali, Reece Topley and Sam Billings. Skipper Eoin Morgan had earlier cited that the whole decision of squad selection was done with the motive of winning every game.
And the visitors have managed to implement the same by whitewashing the home team 3-0 at Cape Town yesterday.
Mark Wood, who showed grit during the ODI series against Ireland was not included in the T20I squad came as a surprise call. He also played a significant role for England during their ODI series against Australia in September, and picked three wickets.
He has the ability to use the pace of the pitch and conditions in South Africa could very well make him more threatening.
“Yes, I had a conversation with Eoin Morgan before the first game and he was saying it’s a tough call but they were going to go with the team they went with,” Wood said.
“It wasn’t anything I did wrong, they thought I was preparing well, it was just the gut feeling he had and the team he went with. That’s an international sport. I feel I did alright in the Australia T20s but we’ve just won 3-0 here so it proved to be the right call.” he added.
Morgan went ahead with Tom Curran instead of Wood in the T20I squad considering his superiority with both bat and ball in the shortest format.
England limited-overs skipper is also testing the bench strength with the agenda of having the best team ahead of the T20 World Cup next year.
