The International Cricket Council (ICC) board members are still hemming and hawing over the assignment of new ICC chairman as the the board failed to reach a conclusion on the subject. The board members of the cricket governing body especially arranged for a meeting on Monday to discuss talks over the nomination process of the new candidate for chairman’s post. However, the meeting fell flat in reaching consonance.
“Yes, there was no unanimity on a number of issues. Firstly, there is a divided house on whether there should be simple majority or the existing 2/3rd majority in a house of 17,” an ICC Board member au courant of the situation told PTI.
“Colin Graves (England) is a strong candidate but it can’t be said that he is favourite anymore. There are countries which won’t support Graves. Similarly, someone like Dave Cameron (former Cricket West Indies president) may enter the fray with support of two independent directors but may not get enough numbers. Ditto for Chris Nenzani (South Africa),” a former ICC Director said.
The ICC is facing the problem of finding an acceptable replacement of the former chairman, Shashank Manohar. As far as the consideration of the potential candidates goes, no one seems to possess a record that fits the requirements of the job. Even if some members do buck for one candidate if there is no homogeneity of votes a name cannot be decided.
With the possibility of the BCCI president, Sourav Ganguly volunteering for the responsibility still seeming vague, the ICC members are in a fix.
“The best solution is to have a candidate acceptable to all and avoid an election which creates a tense atmosphere between member nations. But yes, I agree that by now, we should have been able to finalize the nomination process,” the official added.
