England’s limited overs skipper Eoin Morgan on Friday said that test skipper Joe Root has a future in the T20I cricket for the national side.
His statement comes days after the national selector Ed Smith had said that the board doesn’t want to overburden him with T20I duties. But Morgan contradicts with him saying Root could very well be a part of the T20I side in the future.
As of now, England and Australia are scheduled to engage in a three-match T20I series starting today at the Rose Bowl Ground. After the T20I series, there will be a three-match ODI series starting from September 11 at the Old Trafford Stadium.
Currently, Root is playing for Yorkshire in the Vitality Blast T20 and Morgan said that he had a word with him and said he has chances to join the national side.
“We’ve spoken to Joe and he certainly does have a future. The conversation was surrounding Joe not getting into the best 11 at the moment, but also we didn’t want to carry him around and not play any cricket.” Morgan said ahead of the 1st T20I.
“Joe wants to play T20 cricket and put his best case forward, particularly when he doesn’t have a lot of opportunities to go back to Yorkshire and play T20 cricket. We felt this was a really good opportunity to do that.” he added.
Root played his last T20I match against Pakistan back in 2019 and wished to get a place in the T20I team before the T20 World Cup next year.
He has played 32 matches and scored 893 runs at an average of 35.75 for England. He was also England’s leading run-scorer during 2016 T20 World Cup.
