The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday confirmed that India will get the hosting rights for the Men’s T20 World Cup in 2021 as planned. The governing body also said that Australia will get to host the same event in 2022.
The ICC meeting also concluded with the decision of postponement of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2021 in New Zealand till March 2022 due to the scare of the coronavirus pandemic.
The IBC (commercial subsidiary of the ICC) had a major call on this as it considered various factors such as health, cricket and commercial impact of COVID-19 around the world before taking this decision.
After the announcement, the ICC acting Chairman Imran Khwakja said:
“Over the last few months as we have considered how we return to staging global events, our number one priority has been to protect the health and safety of everyone involved in ICC events.
“The decisions the Board have taken today are in the best interests of the sport, our partners and importantly our fans. I’d like to thank our partners at the BCCI, Cricket Australia and Cricket New Zealand as well as the Australian and New Zealand governments for their continued support and commitment to a safe return to ICC events.”
The members also concluded that the Men’s T20 World Cup will remain as decided and all the teams who have qualified will get to participate in the event next year. While there will be a new procedure for the selection procedure for the same event in 2022 which will take place in Australia.
