Sunrisers Hyderabad vice-captain Kane Williamson on Wednesday finally spoke on the COVID-19 cases reported in the IPL franchises.
Williamson said that a sudden emergence of the COVID-19 cases in the bio-secure bubble in the UAE has raised “apprehension” about the whole tournament.
The 30-year-old is supposed to leave for the UAE on September 4 and join his squad Sunrisers Hyderabad after undergoing coronavirus tests.
“But obviously that’s bad news. You don’t want to hear anybody has COVID. I hear they are predominantly asymptomatic so hopefully, through another lockdown period they can come through and will be okay.” Williamson said.
“Obviously there’s a little bit of apprehension, certainly as you get nearer to the time. Now it’s two days out you start thinking you do have to be extremely vigilant and disciplined,” he added.
As many as 13 personnel of the CSK including two players had tested positive for COVID-19 leading to their extended quarantine until September 1. He also praised BCCI’s effort for the kind of arrangement they have done for this year’s league.
“That’s part of the reason why they made every team stay at a different hotel,” Williamson told a radio channel.
All the teams excluding the CSK franchise have started their training since the last week. Most of the players are yet to arrive in Dubai. They are expected to reach UAE before the tournament begins on September 19.
