Delhi Capitals’ speedster Ishant Sharma is set to miss the next few games in the ongoing tournament in the UAE. The franchise confirmed the news of his absence after he missed out of the first game against Kings XI Punjab due to back spasm.
The team management doesn’t want to push Ishant to play until he recovers completely from his injury. Delhi Capitals have only played one match so far and considering the long season, there is no rush in bringing Ishant immediately.
“He will ideally need a little time and may miss a game or two. We will not risk Ishant and rush him into the XI so early in the season. The games have only begun and he is a vital cog going into the middle and business end of the tournament,” a Delhi Capitals official said.
The official spoke about the severity of the spasm and the overall workload on the team saying: “No, it has nothing to do with returning to training after the pandemic-induced break. He had been training constantly during the break so that is not the case. Also, injuries happen to sportspersons all the time. Even a batsman can suffer spasms while batting at the nets. He was assessed immediately by the physio and necessary measures were taken,”
Shreyas Iyer led side will next face the Chennai Super Kings at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 26. Kagiso Rabada has been sensational with the ball for the Capitals and also bowled in the Super over and helped in winning the match.
Shreyas Iyer is banking on Kagiso Rabada due to his experienced and match-winning spells unti Ishant returns to the side after recovery.
