West Indies skipper Jason Holder has said that ‘really happy’ with the support that the New Zealand cricket team has extended for the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. Kane Williamson has promised to continue to support the movement and raise awareness about the BLM campaign. The teams have decided that they will take a knee at the beginning of the two-Test matches between the teams that will commence on December 3 in Hamilton. The teams had also done the same before the three T20Is last month to raise awareness against racial inequality.
Holder was highly appreciative of the host team’s gesture and courteousness. He said that he was extremely happy with their support.
“It just shows the kind of individuals that New Zealand cricket has. Kane came openly to me and we sat down and had a really good chat around it. It was just mainly him hearing our side of it. Really happy with his support…and New Zealand Cricket has started a campaign too, which is really good.”
Williamson also talked about their conversation regarding the matter and said at a press conference on Thursday, “Jason and I caught up; [we are] looking to continue what was done during the T20s and try to continue that awareness around the BLM movement and also the Give Nothing To Racism campaign that New Zealand Cricket is right behind as well. So that will be continued on the first day of each Test match”.
Holder strongly feels that they have certain responsibilities as individuals to support people who are suffering and make others aware of their situations. He said “Us as individuals, we go around the world, we mingle with so many different people – you never quite understand what some people go through. The more education we put around it, the better off this world will be.”
“I think that’s a step in the right direction,” he said. “The more we become aware of what’s in front of us as people, we would understand what certain people go through,” Jason added.
West Indies players will sport the logo of BLM on their collars of their shirts during their first Test.
