New Zealand pacer Matt Henry is doubtful to play in the side’s upcoming home series against West Indies due to an injury. The pacer has sustained a fracture on his right thumb while batting during the net session with Canterbury.
Henry is currently the part of Canterbury in the ongoing Plunket Shield tournament, but now he has been ruled out owing to his injury.
Due to the severity of his injury, Henry is expected to sit out for the next four to six weeks until he recovers completely. This means he will also miss out on the initial days of the home season starting with the T20I series against West Indies from November 27. It will be followed by the two-match Test series starting from December 3.
“Matt was unfortunately struck on the tip of the right thumb while batting in the nets,” Canterbury physio Tim Dovbysh said.
“Matt got an X-ray immediately after training which confirmed the fracture. He’ll need a temporary rest from bowling but will still add value to the team at training and will start bowling when able,” he added.
Earlier, the 28-year-old had sustained a broken thumb in Australia after he tried to save a cover drive from Joe Burns during the third Test in Sydney.
“Lortan has been training really well and he’s had an impressive preseason,” Canterbury coach Peter Fulton said.
“With a new wicket at Hagley Oval and some bad weather around, Lortan gives us the option to potentially play an extra batsman.” he added.
