It was on this day 18 years ago, Indian pacer Ajit Agarkar got his name framed in the Lord’s Honours Boards after scoring a century against England in the first Test of the four-match series.
Agarkar contributed 109 runs from 190 balls for the team on the final day of the first Test at the Lord’s Cricket Ground as India was given to chasing the mark of 568 to conquest the first Test.
Agarkar smashed 19 boundaries through the course of his innings to score 109 runs at a strike rate of 57.36.
apart from Agarkar, no other Indian batsmen were able to score a century in the whole match.
Agarkar’s effort couldn’t help in rescuing India as the side lost the match by 170 runs.
England batted first in the match and scored 487 in the first innings. Virender Sehwag then scored 84 runs for the team which was led Sourav Ganguly, but India was all out for 221 runs only in the first innings, giving England a lead of 266 runs.
From there, the hosts England did not give India any chance to make a retort in the match.
Agarkar has played 26 Tests, 191 ODIs and 4 T20Is for India.
He ended his career with 349 wickets in all formats and was also able to score 1,855 runs.
Agarkar has 288 dismissals to his acclaim in the ODI format and he has also been the chairman for Mumbai’s senior selection committee in the past.
