It was on September 22 in 2007 when India registered an emphatic victory over mighty Australia and eliminate them from the ICC T20 World Cup. Both the teams had played really well before encountering each other in the second semi-finals of the tournament.
Earlier, MS Dhoni had won the toss and chose to bat first as Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag opened inning for India. The opening pair got out within the 8th over which paved the path for Robin Uthappa and the tournament star Yuvraj Singh.
Yuvraj returned to the playing XI after missing out on the quarterfinals match against the South Africa. He was in a fiery form in the tournament and also hit six consecutive sixes against England.
The left-handed batsman took no time to settle as he started ransacking the Australian bowlers all over the park. He displayed brilliant show of his shots, clearing every bowlers’ delivery as he smashed five boundaries and as many sixes.
With his breath-taking knock of 70 off 30 balls at a strike-rate of 233.33, India reached a total of 188-5 after 20 overs.
Australia started the chase with the dangerous pair of Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden opening the batting. However, the furious Indian bowling line-up comprising of Sreesanth, Irrfan Pathan and Joginder Sharma looked in great touch.
Bowlers win it for India
The Australian side looked good however, Sreesanth bowled Gilchrist (22) and Hayden (62) to give India a much-needed breakthrough for a comeback in the game.
Later, the other bowlers did the magic as the pace trio finished with a couple of wickets each while Harbhajan Singh took one wicket.
The mighty Indian bowlers restricted the Australian team on 173/7, thereby defeating them by 15 runs in the semi-finals. Yuvraj Singh was named the Player of the Match for his crucial knock of 70 runs off 30 balls.
