Star Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is all set to return to the limited-overs squad for India after three years. The 34-year-old had last donned the blue jersey for India three years ago in the white-ball series against the West Indies.
He has been incredible in the Indian Premier League from the last few seasons and also led Kings XI Punjab last season. This season he moved to the Delhi Capitals franchise where the pro-spinner is one of the highest-wicket-takers of the franchise.
BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had earlier said that the selection committee meeting will take place in the upcoming days.
Ashwin has so far taken played eight matches and taken as many wickets in the tournament at an economy rate of 7.11, which is also the second-best after Kagiso Rabada.
“Since a large contingent, comprising players of all three formats, will be departing from the UAE together, it would be prudent to try out Ashwin, at least in the ODIs. He has proven his credentials and I don’t think it’s fair to keep him out,” one of the sources told The Telegraph.
“He has the experience and will come in handy with his variations on Australian wickets.” he reiterated.
From the last few seasons the selectors have mostly relied on the duo Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav. However, that didn’t seem to go well as Kuldeep Yadav looked off-color in the entire tournament in the World Cup last year.
This is clear that Ashwin is the most likely choice to fit in the team in the white-ball series against Australia starting next month.
