India’s limited-overs vice captain Rohit Sharma has been on the headlines ever since he was not named in the white-ball squad against Australia. The Mumbai Indians skipper headed back to India after lifting his fifth IPL trophy in the history of the tournament.
He also missed a few games for Mumbai Indians after sustaining a hamstring injury in a group stage game. He came back during the playoffs and even played a crucial match-winning knock in the finals.
While the other Indian players selected for the Australia tour directly fled to Australia from UAE, Rohit Sharma headed back to India.
The BCCI said that the 33-year-old had to undergo rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore ahead of the series.
Rohit Sharma and lanky pacer Ishant Sharma are both training at the NCA to get ready for the Test series against Australia next month.
One has to serve a quarantine of 14 days after arriving in Australia to be eligible to play in the series. For that, Rohit Sharma would have already reached Australia on November 10. The BCCI has already requested Cricket Australia to ease up the COVID-19 protocols for Ishant and Rohit.
Fans are still baffled over the fact as to why Rohit Sharma returned to India instead of staying with the Indian team and practice with them. Well according to Boria Majumdar, Rohit Sharma’s father had caught coronavirus, forcing him to return back to India just after the IPL.
“The reason Rohit didn’t travel with the team [to Australia], came back to Mumbai with Mumbai Indians is because his father had COVID. That is the reality” Boria said.
“After that, if he didn’t want to play red-ball series, there was no reason for him to travel to the NCA. He could have easily stayed back with Ritika and family. So there is absolutely no reason to say that Rohit didn’t want to play the red-ball series,” he concluded.
