The Hundred tournament team Birmingham Phoenix on Thursday confirmed retaining Moeen Ali and Sophie Devine as the skippers until 2021.
Both Ali and Devine were named the captains of the Birmingham Phoenix’s men’s and women’s teams respectively. The inaugural edition of “The Hundred” tournament was slated to take place this year, however it was postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic.
ECB had earlier announced of extending the contracts of the women players for “The Hundred” till 2021 and did not cut down their salaries.
In case of the men cricketers, the teams will have the choice of retaining the players as per their wish among the squad drafted last year.
While Sophie Devine gets to remain the skipper of the women’s side, Moeen Ali is the only player among men to a part of the tournament without a red-ball contract.
Earlier, Birmingham Phoenix had also announced of retaining Chris Woakes in the men’s and Amy Jones in the women’s team.
The exact date of the tournament is not clear, but it will take place only in the next year due to the packed schedule of both men and women cricketers.
Some of the men cricketers are currently playing in the Indian Premier League in UAE while some women cricketers including Devine is in Sydney for the upcoming WBBL season.
“The Hundred will have a massive impact on developing women’s cricket, especially with the coverage on the BBC,” Sophie said.
Sophie will be the part of the Perth Scorchers squad and also the third overseas signing of the side alongside West Indies’ Deandra Dottin and Stafanie Taylor.
