The fate of the ICC T20 World Cup has already been decided by the ICC by postponing the event to the next year. But the the major topic of attention still remains the World Test Championship (WTC) that has been halted ever since the coronavirus pandemic brought everything to the standstill.
But now the ICC has confirmed that everything is going as per planned and there is nothing to worry about the schedule of the World Test Championship.
The World Test Championship is scheduled to end in March 2021, however, all the fixtures of the test-playing nations were cancelled/postponed, creating doubt on the success of the tournament.
As per the WTC schedule, all the nine sides are supposed to play six series home and away over a period of two years, with the finals taking place at Lords next year.
“We’re in discussions with the members now with the rescheduling of the series that have been postponed to date,” Geoff Allardice, the ICC’s general manager cricket operations, said.
“With the English summer looking like getting both the Test series through, the next ones I know there’s been some talk in the media about West Indies vs South Africa are looking to find a suitable time. But outside that series, the next scheduled ones are in late November in New Zealand. So, the focus will come back on the six postponed series and when they might be able to be replayed.
“With some of them, discussions are underway but we’re in the process of getting updates from all member countries as to what they’re looking at. At the moment, everything is proceeding as planned. The series on in England right now are part of the WTC and all of the series that have been identified will be part of the Championships. It’s about getting a feel for whether they can all be completed within the competition window ending in March next year.”
Some countries still haven’t reached the peak point of coronavirus cases but unlike the T20 World Cup that got postponed, their isn’t any such need of the cut-off date to take a decision on the World Test Championship. Besides, the ICC is also in talks with the countries to reschedule their respective series.
