In a widely anticipated decision, Amol Muzumdar has been selected to lead the Indian women’s cricket team for the next two years.
Tushar Arothe and Jon Lewis were two of the three candidates that the Cricket Advisory Committee, under the guidance of Ashok Malhotra, reviewed before choosing the former Mumbai captain and coach as the finalist.
The Indian women’s team has been without a head coach since Ramesh Powar left for the National Cricket Academy in December of the previous year.
Although Hrishikesh Kanitkar briefly filled the position of batting coach for the series at home against Australia and the T20 World Cup, Muzumdar was appointed instead due to his vast expertise with IPL teams and the South African men’s side.
According to sources, Muzumdar’s presentations impressed the Cricket Advisory Committee since they showed a unique approach that set him apart from the other contenders.
The 48-year-old’s presentation focused a lot of attention on the team’s physical condition and highlighted the value of varied support personnel.
The BCCI is expected to officially announce Muzumdar’s appointment in the coming weeks, with the Indian team ready to leave for Dhaka in a few days.
Amol Muzumdar To Be Appointed for Two-year Tenure
The BCCI plans on hiring Muzumdar for a two-year term as head coach after a period of frequent changes, with an expectation that he will lead the team during the T20 World Cup next year.
“Fitness is a major area of improvement for the women’s cricket team. Some of the players on the national side really need to work on their fitness. Muzumdar also highlighted the need to have a full-fledged support staff, including a mental trainer.
“He is fully aware of what this team needs to get to the next level,” the Board official added.
Muzumdar has a notable coaching history and most recently served as the team’s head coach for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. Mumbai won the Vijay Hazare Trophy and advanced to the Ranji Trophy final last year under his leadership.
As they believe Muzumdar can lead the team to greater heights and bring home an ICC championship, cricket fans and supporters of women’s cricket look forward to Muzumdar’s term as the team’s head coach.
