ICC WC 2023 Qualifier: The cricket world saw the first ever Super Over in the history of the ICC World Cup qualifiers tournament on Monday in Harare. West Indies took on Netherlands in the 18th match of the tournament with the latter winning the game in the Super over.
After losing their match, Windies did well to post a gigantic score of 374 runs on the board. However, the Netherlands produced an outstanding batting effort to level the series in the second innings.
West Indies were provided with a brilliant start by the openers in Brandon King and Johnson and Charles. The duo put on a 101-run partnership for the opening wicket. Charles was the first one to depart but played a solid knock of 54 runs in 55 balls. Shamarh Brooks also played a handy knock of 25 but couldn’t go on to play a big one.
Brandon King, on the other hand, blazed his way to 76 off 81. The Netherlands tried to come back into the contest after they had both Brooks and Kings in short intervals.
Nicholas Pooran’s Century goes in vain
But what followed was an outstanding knock from Nicholas Pooran. The West Indies former skipper finally produced his third ODI ton after a gap of two years. His form this year continues to impress one and all.
Pooran played a sensational knock of 104 runs in 65 balls and stayed unbeaten till the end. K Paul also played a brilliant knock of 46 in 25 balls in the end to help West Indies post a big score on the board.
But West Indies couldn’t have imaged in their wildest dreams that the Netherlands would be able to chase that down. Vikramjit Singh (37 off 32) and Max ODowd (36) set the tone early on but Roston Chase sent both the batters back to the hut at a crucial stage in the game.
Wesley (27) and de Leede (33), later, made handy contributions but it was Teja Nidamanuru, who took the game away with a breathtaking knock of 111 off 76 balls, a knock which was laced with 11 fours and 3 sixes.
Scott Edwards provided him great support, amassing 67 off 47 balls. West Indies managed to get both their wickets but a wonderful cameo from van Beek (28 off 14) in the end helped the Netherlands level the scores.
First Super Over in ICC WC 2023 Qualifier Game:
Jason Holder took the ball in the Super over and van Been just tore apart the West Indies fast bowler. He hammered three fours and as many sixes to attain 30 runs from the over. In reply, West Indies could only manage 8 runs and lost two wickets as well.
