ICC WC Qualifier 2023: After losing three games in a row, Ireland finally picked up a win in their last league game on Tuesday. Paul Sterling put on a show with the bat and helped Ireland notch a mammoth total of 349 runs on the board.
Opening the innings, Sterling played a sensational knock of 162 runs in just 134 balls, a knock which was laced with 15 fours and 8 sixes. He received valuable support from the likes of Balbirnie (66 off 88) and Harry Tector (57 off 33) at the other end, helping Ireland finish on a high.
The United Arab Emirates had no answer to the carnage produced by Irish batters. Sanchit Sharma, though, was brilliant for his spell of 3 for 46 in 7 overs. In reply, skipper M Waseem provided a pretty good start with a handy knock of 45 off just 32 balls but, unfortunately, he got run out and wickets fell in short intervals after that.
McGrarthy sent Aryansh Sharma (18) back to the hut five overs later, while Joshua Little accounted for the wickets of V Aravind (10) and Dsouza (3) in the space of the next three overs to leave the team reeling at 85 for 4.
Ireland Bowlers Choke UAE For All Out on 211 Runs
Ali Naseer and Hameed tried to develop a partnership but McBrine sent the former back as UAE had lost half of their side for just 109 runs on the board. Coming in at number eight, Sanchit Sharma counter-attacked and gave some sort of entertainment.
He amassed 44 off 54 balls, including 1 fours and 3 sixes but that was never going to be enough. In the end, UAE surrendered at just 211 runs. As for Ireland’s bowling, it was a combined effort from the unit.
The likes of Joshua Little, G Dockrell, Campher, and McBrine picked two wickets each, while McCarthy returned with one scalp.
