IPL 2023 Qualifier 2: Gujarat Titans booked their slot in the final of the IPL 2023 after beating Mumbai Indians by 62 runs on Friday at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
They will defend their crowd against Chennai Super Kings in the final on Sunday at the same stadium. In a must-win clash for them, Gujarat hammered a massive score of 233 runs on the board in the first innings.
The man in a purple patch, Shubman Gill exhibited another sensational knock, notching his 3rd century of the season. Gill put on an exhibition of shots in the big game and put the opposition on the back.
He was brutal both on the offside and on the side of the wicket and went on to score 129 runs in just 60 deliveries, a knock which was laced with 7 fours and as many as 10 sixes. He scored those runs at an outstanding strike rate of 215.
Sai Sudharsan gave him handy support as he contributed 43 off 31 balls, while Hardik Pandya also chipped in with a handy cameo of 28 off 13 at the end.
Mumbai’s bowling unit had a forgettable day at the office. They were at the receiving end of some sensational ball striking from Gill.
Akash Madhwal, who picked a five-wicket haul in the last game, conceded 52 runs in 4 overs, while the likes of Chris Jordan (0 for 56) and Piyush Chawla (1 for 45) also went for plenty.
To make matters worse, Ishan Kishan got injured and didn’t come to bat in the second innings. Rohit Sharma (8) also departed early, while impact player Nehal Wadhera got out after scoring a boundary.
Mumbai Indians Couldn’t Gain Momentum After The Powerplay
Mumbai started off poorly, having lost two wickets for just 21 runs on the board. Tilak Varma, however, took matters into his hands and played a counter-attacking knock of 43 off 14. His knock helped Mumbai get back into the chase but couldn’t last for too long as Rashid Khan knocked him over with a peach of a delivery.
Suryakumar Yadav still kept the team in the hunt as he showed great game awareness. Yadav and Green kept scoring boundaries at regular intervals and had reached 120-mark inside 11 overs.
Joshua Little broke the partnership as he rattled Green’s stumps at a crucial stage in the 12th over. Hopes were rested on Suryakumar Yadav after that and he tried his best.
Yadav smashed 7 fours and 2-sixes en-route to his knock of 61 off 38. However, in a bid to hit another boundary, he lost his wicket off Mohit Sharma.
Yadav’s wicket in the 15th over meant the game was all but over for Mumbai. Tim David (2 off 3) failed to take the team closer and Mumbai, in the end, fell 62 runs off the target.
