Prior to the ODI World Cup 2023, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has revealed plans to improve five important cricket venues. This action follows a GAP (Green Assessment Programme) study that the BCCI took out at five locations to make sure that stadiums follow sustainable practices and minimize their environmental impact.
The BCCI has evaluated Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mohali, and Mumbai with the goal of enhancing the experience for spectators as well as players through the development of fundamental amenities like dressing rooms, training centres, seating patterns, and parking. It’s expected that these renovations will cost hundreds of crores.
After complaints from spectators at the Arun Jaitley Stadium during the India-Australia Test series in February and March, the BCCI has shown its commitment to upgrading the facilities and experience for spectators. A fan’s protest about the Wankhede Stadium’s substandard toilets led to renovations there prior to the March One-Day International (ODI) series between India and Australia.
Upgradation of stadiums ahead of World Cup 2023 to boost revenue generation
According to the BCCI, the upgrades will benefit fans as well as the board’s capacity to generate more money and increase public engagement with the sport.
For example, it will take Rs 100 crore to renovate the Delhi stadium, Rs 117.17 crore to do so in Hyderabad, Rs 127.47 crore to carry out the project at Kolkata’s renowned Eden Gardens, Rs 79.46 crore to rebuild Mohali’s decaying PCA stadium, and Rs 78.82 crore at Wankhede.
The ICC has shortlisted 12 venues to host the upcoming World Cup games. These venues include Ahmedabad, which is expected to host the finale, as well as Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dharamsala, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Indore, Rajkot, and Mumbai.
The last time the ODI World Cup was held in India was in 2011 when the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led team took the title. The BCCI’s dedication to promoting the sport and providing a top-notch atmosphere including both players and fans is evident in its focus on upgrading important cricket grounds before the 2023 World Cup.
