The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Medical team has officially ruled out Team India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah from the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad.
“The decision was taken following a detailed assessment and in consultation with the specialists,” said Jay Shah, Honorary Secretary of BCCI.
Bumrah was initially ruled out from the ongoing Mastercard 3-match T20I series against South Africa due to a stress fracture in the lower back.
“We have been told that his injury is not looking good at the moment and it looks like he won’t be travelling to Australia with the Indian team. The medical team will soon submit a detailed report,” a BCCI official had confirmed a few days ago.
The 28-year-old fast bowler recently returned to the India squad ahead of the T20Is against Australia after receiving treatment and rehabilitation from the same injury for two months. He first got injured during the India tour of England back in July this year. Later, he played two games on September 23 and 25 but suffered a relapse of the injury during the South Africa series.
This year, Bumrah has merely played 5 international games each in three formats and 14 games for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.
Bumrah’s absence will be a huge blow to India following the absence of star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja due to a knee injury. The remaining fast bowlers in India’s T20 World Cup side are Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh and all-rounder Hardik Pandya.
Either Deepak Chahar or Mohammed Shami, who were originally named as the standby players, are likely to get this spot in the 15-member squad.
In a further statement, the BCCI said they will soon be naming a replacement for Jasprit Bumrah in the squad for the marquee tournament soon. India has until October 15 to name this injury replacement without requiring ICC permission to do so.
