In a major breakthrough for the reigning New Zealand contingent, eminent batsman and skipper Kane Williamson has confirmed that he is hopeful to return back onto the field before the World Cup 2023. The marquee event is scheduled to take place from October to November in India.
Notably, Williamson had sustained a ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) on his right knee while fielding for Gujarat Titans against Chennai Super Kings in the inaugural fixture of the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. He then underwent a complete surgery in early April.
Regarding his injury, Williamson stated that he has not given up on representing the Black Caps in the World Cup 2023. Furthermore, he said that he is taking his recovery from a right-knee injury on a week-to-week basis. He said that he is making progress to ensure his knee is mended properly as a priority for the marquee event.
Williamson has hardly gone through any prolonged injury. He stated that “I haven’t had such a long-term injury before but talking to other people that have, the journey is a bit of a long one so if you look too far ahead it probably can become a little bit daunting.”
Williamson’s return to be a huge boost for NZ in World Cup 2023
In the last two World Cups, Kane Williamson has been iconic for New Zealand. His heroics paved the way for New Zealand’s back-to-back entry in the finals of the 2015 and the 2019 World Cup. Unfortunately, the Black Caps failed to make it in both the ultimate games, and the one against England in 2019 ended in a dramatic super-over finish.
Williamson has been New Zealand’s finest white-ball batsman as he has scored 6,554 ODI runs. He will truly serve as New Zealand’s bankable asset for the World Cup. He will likely be named as the Captain of the team if he storms back into the squad.
