Veteran leg-spinner Rashid Khan has been reappointed as the captain of Afghanistan’s T20 International side. This comes after incumbent skipper and all-rounder Mohammed Nabi stepped down from the role after the team’s misery at the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup in Australia.
Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) Chairman Mirwais Ashraf addressed the media and officially confirmed Rashid’s reappointment. Mirwais stated that Rashid Khan is one of the most splendid names in Afghanistan cricket and he has paramount experience in the shortest format of the game to likely lead the team to achieve greater heights in the near future.
Rashid Khan had also led the side in a brief stint earlier in his career. Khan has been the T20I captain for seven international fixtures in 2019. Under his leadership, Afghanistan historically won four out of the seven games including a couple of them against mighty T20 giants West Indies.
Rashid Khan led Afghanistan in the 2018-19
Along with T20I, Rashid Khan has also led Afghanistan’s ODI contingent for a total of seven games from 2018 to 2019. However, the colossal leg-spinner achieved less success in comparison with his favourite T20I format. Notably, Khan has also been the Red Cap’s skipper for their only two matches played back in 2019.
Interestingly, ACB has decided to vest the powers in the hands of Rashid for only the T20I format. They will likely appoint distinct skippers for the One-Day International and the Test format.
Rashid will now take the authority for his side in the upcoming three-match T20I series against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in February 2023. Khan has noteworthy T20I experience and will likely steal a breathtaking victory for his side.
Speaking to the media, Rashid mentioned that captaincy is a big responsibility and he is happy that the management has once again shown faith in him. Khan further stated that he will build collaborative teamwork through the batch of young guys and attain success for his side in the near future.
