WI vs SA: West Indies Cricket on Tuesday announced the squad for the upcoming white-ball series comprising three T20Is and five ODIs against Momentum Proteas that is set to commence on August 31. The cricket board has announced a 13-member squad for the first T20I to take place at Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground on Tuesday.
Stafanie Taylor has been ruled out of the series after being deemed a primary contact of a Covid-19 positive case. She is serving the mandatory isolation period in Antigua. Veteran off-spinner Anisa Mohammed has been named as the interim captain in the absence of Taylor.
Youngster Qiana Joseph has received a call-up in the T20I squad. The all-rounder has played two T20Is having made her debut in 2017. She recently received the central contract for the 2021-22 season and her latest appearance was during the West Indies A versus Pakistan A side.
Seamer Shabika Gajnabi, who has represented the national side in seven T20Is, has also been made a comeback in the squad. Her latest venture was the West Indies versus Pakistan ODI series.
Off-spinner Karishma Ramharack was left out this time around. She was also left out from the 17 contracted player list last year, which played against England.
Lead Selector for Women’s cricket, Ann Browne-John said, “The CG Insurance T20I and ODI Series against South Africa give another opportunity for the team to play international matches ahead of the upcoming ICC World Cup qualifiers. It is unfortunate that Stafanie will not be available for this series but there are a number of experienced players who we would be looking, to fill any void. The young player Qiana Joseph brings another left-hand batter option as well as left-arm orthodox bowling which has been lacking in the team. This will be a good test coming out of the recent Pakistan series since South Africa is one of the higher-ranked teams.”
Meanwhile, Momentum Proteas announced their squad on Monday. Andrie Steyn has been named the captain of the squad.
West Indies Squad for 1st T20I – Anisa Mohammed (c), Deanda Dottin (vc), Aaliyah Alleyne, Shamilia Connell, Britney Cooper, Shabika Gajnabi, Chinelle Henry, Qiana Joseph, Kycia Knight, Kyshona Knight, Hayley Matthews, Chedean Nation, Shakera Selman
