MI-W vs UP-W: Mumbai Indians defeated UP Warriorz by 72 runs at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai, advancing themselves to the Women’s Premier League 2023 finals in a dominating performance. The season’s final match will be played on Sunday at Brabourne Stadium between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals.
Batting first, Mumbai Indians set a challenging target of 183 runs. Nat Sciver-Brunt led the attack with a blistering 72 runs in 38 balls that included nine fours and two sixes. When Sciver-Brunt was on six, Sophie Ecclestone dropped a catch off Rajeshwari Gayakwad at mid-off, giving Sciver-Brunt an early lifeline.
In response, Alyssa Healy and Shweta Sehrawat, UP Warriorz’s openers, were dismissed in the first three overs of the innings. In the 13th over, Mumbai’s fast bowler Issy Wong struck Healy for 11, Kiran Navgire (43), Simran Sheikh (0), and Sophie Ecclestone (0) to complete a hat-trick.
With 43 runs in 27 balls that included 4 fours and 3 sixes, Kiran Navgire fought alone for the UP Warriorz, but no other batter worried the Mumbai Indians. Mumbai Indians bundled UP Warriorz for just 110 runs in 17.4 overs courtesy of Wong’s 4 for 15 in 4 overs brilliance.
Issy Wong became the first bowler to take a hattrick in WPL 2023
The fifth over’s run-out of Tahlia McGrath made things worse for the UP Warriorz. Kevin Navgire’s 43 runs and Grace Harris’s 14 runs made an effort to repair the innings, but Sciver-Brunt bowled out Harris to win the game. But, Wong’s hat-trick in the same over put a stop to UP Warriorz’s chances of making a comeback.
In the end, Mumbai Indians easily won while UP Warriorz struggled to leave a mark. For the entire innings, the Mumbai bowlers applied pressure, and Wong’s hat trick was the icing on the cake.
Overall, it was a dominant performance by Mumbai Indians, with both bat and ball, as they booked their place in the WPL final and will face Delhi Capitals on Sunday.
