RCB W vs UP W: Royal Challengers Bangalore finally registered a win to open their account on Wednesday. RCB won their first-ever game of the WPL 2023 after beating UP Warriorz by 5 wickets.
Winning the toss, the RCB put the UP Warriorz to bat first at DY Patil stadium. They struggled to keep their innings tight as RCB asked tough questions on a swinging surface. The batting team lost Alyssa Healy and Devika Vaidya in the first over itself. The wicket continued to fall in the powerplay as they scored 29 runs for losing three wickets at the end of six overs.
The team fell into misery when they lost five wickets at the expense of just 31 runs. However, Grace Harris and Deepti Sharma took advantage of Bengaluru’s poor fielding. They both posted 69 runs partnership to take the team to a 100-run landmark. However, Ellyse Perry had different plans as she picked both batters in the 16th over to turn the tide again in Bengaluru’s favour.
The Warriorz’ lower order showed spine and added 34 runs for the last three wickets to post a challenging total. Ellyse Perry was the most successful bowler as she picked three wickets for just 16 runs in four overs. Sophie Devine and Sobhana Asha picked two wickets each to keep the opposition in check.
Smriti Mandhana’s run drought continued
RCB did not get the flying start they needed. The experienced Sophie Devine perished in the first over whereas the expensive Smriti Mandana could not score a run before getting dismissed. Though Ellyse Perry and Heather Knight tried to stitch the broken chase, they were dismissed before the first time out. This had put the Bengaluru team in trouble.
The enterprising Kanika Ahuja and Richa Ghosh stitched a 60-run partnership to bring Bengaluru’s chase back on track. Kanika Ahuja scored 46 runs whereas Richa Ghosh accumulated 32 runs to help the team go over the line. Deepti Sharma was the most successful bowler as she picked two wickets to inflict early damage.
With the win, RCB has retained their mathematical possibility to qualify for the knockout as the third team in the five-team tournament.
