The Board of Cricket Control for India (BCCI) has finally announced the much anticipated Indian squad for the upcoming World Test Championship Final (WTC) 2023 against Australia. The WTC Final is scheduled to take place from June 7 to June 11 at the Oval in London.
Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian contingent against the heavyweight Australian side. Notably, Australia finished first in the World Test Championship Cycle 2021-23 whereas India managed to finish second. New Zealand won the first edition in 2021 where India emerged as runners-up.
Notably, veteran Indian batsman Ajinkya Rahane has stormed back into the Test squad after his exemplary tiny at the ongoing edition of the IPL 2023. Rahane is featuring for the Chennai Super Kings and has already smashed three explosive half-centuries. Rahane had not played a Test match since January 2022.
Ace paceman Jasprit Bumrah continues to recover from his injury and has been excluded from the squad. His services will be highly missed. Apart from Bumrah, Rishabh Pant has also been ruled out as he is too injured after a ghastly accident last December.
While Rohit, Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara will take the charge of the frontline batting attack, Rahane along with KL Rahul, KS Bharat (wk), Ashwin and Jadeja will strengthen the middle-order batting attack. The duo of Ashwin and Jadeja will prove to be crucial for team India. Axar Patel has also been named in the squad as a backup to the spinning all-rounder duo.
Amongst the pacers, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj are the frontrunners. Along with the two eminent new-ball bowlers, BCCI has also named Umesh Yadav and Jayded Unadkat as the backup pacemen. Shardul Thakur has also been named to serve as a vital all-rounder option.
