International Cricket Council (ICC) has slammed ace Indian frontline batter Shubman Gill with a hefty penalty of 115% of the match fees after he publicly criticized the umpire’s decision that declared him out in the Final of the World Test Championship 2023.
Gill was caught by Cameron Green in the slips off Scott Boland while he was batting on 18 runs on Day 4 of the ultimate Test match at the Oval in London. Multiple camera angles found no conclusive evidence against Green’s attempt to catch the ball and dismiss Gill whereas the front angle had enough footage displaying that the ball had touched the ground.
Shubman Gill was deeply agonized over the umpire’s decision and publicly mocked their decision on social media. Gill took to his Twitter handle and shared a photo of Green with a face-palm emoji while he was attempting Shubman’s catch and the ball ought to be touching the ground. Gill also sarcastically put up the photo on his Instagram handle with clapping emoticons on his story.

Skipper Rohit Sharma was also deeply disappointed over Gill’s ruling by third umpire Richard Kettleborough. Sharma’s facial reaction was enough to convey that he had never thought that the umpire would have given this out.
“India’s Shubman Gill will face a sanction for appearing to criticise the decision to give him out on the fourth day of the Test, breaching article 2.7 which relates to public criticism or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match. The young opener was fined a further 15 per cent of his match fee,” the statement read.
The Indian fans were also dissatisfied with the umpire call and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also made a public statement opposing the decision.
Meanwhile, India’s 444-run target chase was dwindled by the mighty Australians who dismissed the Asian side for a mere 234 runs. Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland pioneered Australia’s success whereas Ajinkya Rahane stood as the only effective Indian batter.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill’s decision to display his displeasure has cost him a hefty fine. While there have not been any misconduct proceedings against Gill, the monetary cost is slightly higher.
