In an utter disappointment for all the cricketing fans across the globe, both the matches scheduled on October 28 at the ongoing edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 were abandoned without a ball being bowled. Notably, both matches were scheduled at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Intermittent showers along with light thunderstorms were witnessed before the start of play between Ireland and Afghanistan. The downpour continued to intensify as the match was called off before the toss and any legal delivery was bowled. Both sides were awarded a point each.
Interestingly, the high-voltage action between the hosts Australia and England was called off due to the wet outfield. The fans were anticipating their favourite athletes for some blockbuster entertainment as the rain had stopped but the umpires left them on a cliffhanger as the rain had already done the damage.
Ireland clearly benefited from the match being called off as they jumped to the third position with three points in their kitty. However, they wouldn’t mind grabbing a couple of them to ease their qualification criteria. Unfortunately, Afghanistan will be astonished as this is their second match being washed off in the tournament. They stand last in the table with two points.
From England’s perspective, the former World Cup triumphs will be disappointing as they lost a thrilling game to Ireland owing to the rainy slump. It was their most stunning opportunity to beat Australia and make it into the semifinals. On the other hand, Australia wouldn’t mind being awarded a point as they need to get hold of underdogs Ireland and Afghanistan in their upcoming games to qualify for the semifinals.
