For the forthcoming limited-overs series against Ireland at home, Robert Samuels, a former West Indies batter, has been chosen as the team’s interim head coach. Cricket West Indies made the decision after opting not to renew the contracts of prior head coach Courtney Walsh and assistant coach Corey Collymore in April.
Samuels has an immense amount of knowledge in his new role. He was Walsh’s assistant coach in previous years. He has extensive knowledge of the players and the women’s game in general, having played for West Indies in six Tests, eight ODIs, and numerous first-class and List-A matches between 1996 and 1997.
Putting trust in Samuels’ appointment, CWI High-Performance Manager Graeme West said, “Robert brings continuity and stability to get the team through this period. He has great knowledge of the players and the women’s game in general and strong knowledge of the support staff, so it’s almost a seamless transition with Robert coming in as Interim Head Coach.”
As the team’s interim head coach, Samuels wants to put his own concepts into practice and have a constructive impact. He has already made progress in his new job, and it is expected that he will keep doing so for the course of the series.
Ryan Austin, Leeward Islands to assist Robert Samuels
Former West Indies off-spinner Ryan Austin and former Leeward Islands captain Steve Liburd will be assisting Samuels all through this tour. As an interim assistant coach, Liburd, who is currently the head coach of the West Indies Women’s Under-19 Rising Stars, can provide crucial support.
The three ODI series between West Indies Women and Ireland, which is set to take place from June 26 to July 2, will be the new coaching team’s first challenge. This series will be important since it is a part of the Women’s Championship, which determines the direct qualifiers for the 2025 World Cup.
Earning victories in these games will be crucial for West Indies’ chances of qualifying because they are currently sitting second-last on the 10-team table.
After the ODI series, three T20Is will be played between the two sides from July 5 to 9. The Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in St. Lucia, where the 18-member West Indies team is presently preparing for the series, is going to host all six white-ball matches.
The West Indies women’s cricket team, led by Robert Samuels and backed by his skilled coaching staff, aspires to prove its abilities, improve its standings and qualify for the upcoming World Cup.
