England Women’s Test squad for the upcoming Women’s Ashes opening at Trent Bridge has just changed, dropping out Alice Capsey and Alice Davidson-Richards. Meanwhile, Freya Kemp, who recovered from her injuries, is ready to return to international competition. Mahika Gaur was also added to the team after being called up.
Alice Capsey, an aspiring all-rounder who was looking forward to making her Test debut, will now be forced to wait for another chance. However, Caspey and Davidson-Richards are scheduled to play their first T20 match on Wednesday for the England Women’s A team against Australia A.
Kemp, the 18-year-old all-rounder got a stress fracture in her back during England’s December tour to the Caribbean. Although, She quickly recovered and most recently took part for the Southern Vipers in the Charlotte Edwards Cup.
Kemp, who made her debut in international cricket last summer, made an impact against India by being the youngest women player from England to reach the fifty-run mark in a T20I game. She was honoured as the Women’s Young Player of the Year by the PCA and the Cricket Writers’ Club as a result of her outstanding achievements.
Meanwhile, Davidson-Richards played for the England squad in the most recent red-ball warm-up match against Australia. She earned her Test debut against South Africa at Taunton a year ago and scored a century.
Mahika Gaur, Bryony Smith Selected for England A
Also with the addition, Mahika Gaur, the 17-year-old all-rounder who plays local cricket for Thunder and has competed for the UAE at the Under-19 level also got the call-up for England A side. Bryony Smith from the South East Stars and Linsey Smith from the Southern Vipers have both been chosen for the England A team, along with Gaur, who trained with the senior England group during their training camps.
Under the guidance of coach Jon Batty, England A will take on Australia A, starting with three T20s on June 21, 23, and 25 and Three ODI’s will follow on June 28, June 30, and July 2.
Richard Bedbrook, Head of Performance Pathways for England Women, expressed excitement for the approaching T20 matches and stated that the A-side had put up an incredible fight against the entire Australian team during their warm-up match.
Although Capsey and Davidson-Richards’ absence from the Test squad may have upset some supporters Kemp’s inclusion and the promising arrival of Gaur give the England Women’s team fresh energy and talent.
