The Big Bash League (BBL) is Australia’s premier T20 franchise league. It is certainly the most lucrative and fascinating T20 league across the country and the globe. Big Bash League replaced the traditional Twenty20 Big Bash and took over as the Top tier league in 2011-12. This embarked on the inaugural season of the BBL.
The Big Bash League has emerged as the most crucial platform for evolving cricketing talents to showcase their talent. The BBL is based on city-based franchises and includes eighth teams namely Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers, Sydney Thunders, Adelaide Strikers, Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars and Brisbane Heat.
From its inception, the BBL has witnessed 12 glorious editions of the championship. Over the course of 12 years, the league has seen six distinct winners. Each edition of the championship has been very exciting and eccentric to provide wholesome entertainment to the crowd.
Perth Scorchers is the most successful franchise at BBL as it has clinched five successful title victories. The Scorchers are followed by Sydney Sixers who have emerged as the triumphs three times.

Sydney Sixers (2011)
The Sydney Sixers were crowned the winners of the Big Bash League in the inaugural edition of 2011-12. Sydney Sixers defeated Perth Scorchers in the Finals by seven wickets. The stunning efforts of Moises Henriques helped Sixers to bag the prestigious title in the maiden season where Steve Smith was the captain of the side. Melbourne Stars David Hussey was awarded the Man of the Series title.
Brisbane Heat (2012)
Brisbane Heat emerged victorious in the 2012-13 edition of the Big Bash League. Brisbane restricted Perth Scorchers in their hunt to a title victory for the consecutive time. Scorchers emerged as runners-up in the first two seasons and were defied with a title. The heroics of Nathan Hauritz helped Brisbane crush Perth. Brisbane was led by Chris Hartley. Aaron Finch of Melbourne Renegades was declared as Man of the Series.
Perth Scorchers (2014)
Perth Scorchers finally ended their title hunt as they clinched the 2013-14 edition of the Big Bash League. Scorchers defeated Hobart Hurricanes by 39 runs in the finals as Brad Hogg’s impressive bowling performance helped them power a crucial victory. Perth Scorchers were led by Simon Katich and Hobart’s Ben Dunk was named as Man of the Series.
Perth Scorchers (2015)
Perth Scorchers consistent stint at the Big Bash League helped them bag successive title victories. Led by Adam Voges, Perth defeated arch-rivals Sydney Sixers in the final by 4 wickets. Shaun Marsh played a pivotal role for the Scorchers in the final whereas Jacques Kallis of Sydney Thunders succeeded as the Man of the Series.
Sydney Thunder (2016)
The Sydney Thunder franchise bagged their maiden BBL Title in the 2015-16 season by defeating Melbourne Stars in the final. Usman Khwaja smashed an explosive knock to help Sydney win the final. Sydney Thunder were led by ace batsman Michael Hussey. Chris Lynn of the Brisbane Heat clinched the Man of the Series title.
Perth Scorchers (2017)
Perth Scorchers sustained their dominance at the BBL by claiming their third title victory in the 2016-17 season. Scorchers defeated Sydney Sixers in the final by 9 wickets as Jhye Richardson anchored a sizzling bowling performance. Adam Voges was the captain of Perth. Brisbane Heat’s Chris Lynn bagged his consecutive Man of the Series award.
Adelaide Strikers (2018)
Adelaide Strikers clinched their maiden Big Bash League title victory in the 2017-18 edition of the championship. Led by Travis Head, the Strikers defeated Hobart Hurricanes by 25 runs in the final. Jake Weatherland played a vital role in the victory. D’Arcy Short of Hobart Hurricanes was named the Man of the Series.
Melbourne Renegades (2019)
Melbourne Renegades bagged their first Big Bash League title in 2019 and became the fifth successful franchise in the history of the tournament. Melbourne Renegades defeated their sister franchise Melbourne Stars in the final. Aaron Finch led the franchise whereas Dan Christian piloted the finale victory. D’Arcy Short of Hobart Hurricanes once again clinched the Man of the Series title.
Sydney Sixers (2020)
Sydney Sixers once again rose to prominence after they clinched their second title victory in the 2019-20 edition. Sixers defeated Melbourne Stars in the final who successively refrained from a title victory. Moises Henriques led Sydney Sixers where Joshua Philippe anchored in the final. Marcus Stoinis of Melbourne Stars won the Man of the Series award.
Sydney Sixers (2021)
Sydney Sixers claimed their third title victory at the Big Bash League by defeating Perth Scorchers in the final of the 2020-21 edition. Sixers had then become the joint successful franchise at BBL until the next season. Moises Henriques was the captain and James Vince powered the victory in the final. Joshua Philippe of Sydney Sixers bagged the Man of the Series award.
Perth Scorchers (2022)
Perth Scorchers won their fourth Big Bash League title in the 2021-22 edition and once again bagged the crown of the most successful franchise at the championship. Led by Ashton Turner, Scorchers defeated Sydney Sixers in the final after the heroics of Laurie Evan. Ben McDermott of Hobart Hurricanes won the Player of the Series title.
Perth Scorchers (2023)
Perth Scorchers sustained their winning run in the 2022-23 edition of the Big Bash League as well. Scorchers are the incumbent champions and won the trophy for a record fifth time. Ashton Turner once again played the defiant leadership role and he also starred in the finals against Brisbane Heat. Matthew Short of Perth Scorchers was named the Man of the Series.
The 12th edition of the Big Bash League saw many changes in the rules of the game. However, the format of the game remained the same. As the T20 format of the game evolves, the fans can certainly expect dynamic changes in the tournament that aims at providing the best entertainment.
