Australia has retained their prestigious top position in the latest edition of the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings. The most recent rankings have dropped the results from the 2019-2020 season and will only consider the matches that have been completed since May 2020.
Australia retained their supremacy in the white-ball 50-over format with 118 rating points in their kitty. Pakistan stands just below the heavyweight Kangaroos as they have 116 rating points. The tussle between the two sides will be interesting to watch ahead of the upcoming ODI season.
The newly introduced criteria for ICC Rankings weights matches completed before May 2022 at 50% and all the matches post it at 100%. Similar criteria were also observed while the announcement of ICC Test rankings previously where Australia lost their top spot to the monumental Indian side.
Interestingly, Pakistan grabbed the top spot in ODI Rankings last week after they had grabbed a 4-0 series lead against New Zealand. Unfortunately, they lost the final ODI of the series and slipped to the second position. Had they won the last game, Pakistan would have pipped Australia to claim the top spot.
India is currently third in ICC Men’s ODI Rankings
Below Pakistan is their arch-rival India who holds the third position in ODI Rankings with 115 rating points. Notably, India is the No. 1 Team in ICC Test and T20I Rankings. Rohit Sharma & co. will likely aim to seize the top ODI spot as well with multiple One Day International (ODI) contests scheduled later this year.
New Zealand has slipped to the fourth position after losing 4 rating points whereas England is holding the fifth position. South Africa and Bangladesh hold the sixth and seventh positions respectively. Afghanistan has gained significantly as it has overtaken Sri Lanka and West Indies to claim the ninth position.
The Women’s Rankings will be assessed and released by ICC after a review in October.
