The International Cricket Council (ICC) has finally concluded the prolonged deliberations alongside the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to finalize the much-anticipated schedule of the World Cup 2023 that will be hosted in India. ICC is set to make the official announcement of the championship schedule on 27th June 2023. Interestingly, the date is exactly 100 days before the start of the marquee event on October 5th 2023.
The delay in the announcement of the schedule is believed to be the ongoing tussle between India (BCCI) and Pakistan (PCB). The much-controversial Asia Cup 2023 debacle ended with a favourable outcome for both nations. PCB has been refraining to send their final draft of Indian venues they will be able to feature at due to the escalating tensions. They are now on the verge of delivering the same.
The outgoing PCB Chairperson Najam Sethi stated that the decision on approval of venues in India is in the hands of the government. Once the government approves the request, a confirmation will be sent to the ICC and BCCI.
The PCB has refrained from playing against India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad citing security reasons. The mammoth stadium was a profitable venture for the BCCI but the game will now likely be shifted to Chennai.
World Cup 2023 Schedule To be Out on June 27
Furthermore, Pakistan had also objected to playing against Afghanistan at Chennai. This is because Afghanistan’s heavily armed spin department will be very effective at the spin-friendly tracks in Chennai. PCB had requested to shift the Afghanistan fixture to Bengaluru and Australia’s game to Chennai.
However, the BCCI had straight away rejected this request and will consider only security concern requests. It will now be interesting to find out the complete schedule and where the heavyweight India vs Pakistan clash takes place.
The World Cup 2023 Schedule will now likely be out by the next week on June 27 to mark the countdown of 100 days till the tournament starts. Fans have already been awaiting for it for a while now.
