Ace Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. Iyer is the incumbent skipper of the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise and his unavailability will prove to be horrendous for the contingent. Iyer will also miss the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2023 against Australia which is scheduled to take place in the first week of June in London.
Iyer will continue to recover from the woes of his grievous back injury. Shreyas Iyer had recently recovered from his lower-back injury and rushed into India’s national team for the Australian Test series. He was a part of India’s XI for the fourth test at Ahmedabad where he complained of back pain and was immediately rushed to the hospital for preliminary treatment and scans. He was thus ruled out of the Australian ODI series.
Shreyas will now miss two important events of the summer season, i.e. the IPL and the WTC Final. It was believed that Iyer would return to the field at IPL 2023 as doctors had only advised a good rest. However, the recent reports have shocked the BCCI, KKR and the fans as Iyee will miss cricket for the next 3 to 6 months.
Big jolt to India as Bumrah and Pant also unavailable for WTC Final
India will now head into the World Test Championship Finals as the underdogs. Apart from Shreyas Iyer, India will also miss the services of veteran wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and astonishing speedster Jasprit Bumrah.
Rishabh Pant was injured in a horrific car accident in December and will likely remain out of the field for 2023. Bumrah who has been struggling with his injury for a brief time will require additional recovery and rehabilitation before ultimately returning to professional cricket.
The Kolkata Knight Riders will now announce a replacement skipper as Iyer has been ruled out. Shakib Al Hasan, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine and Tim Southee are the top contenders to be appointed to the eminent position.
