Australia’s women’s team won their sixth Women’s T20 World Cup title after beating South Africa by 19 runs in the final on Sunday at Newlands stadium in Cape Town.
On a track that was difficult to bat on, Australia’s women’s team did well to post 156 runs in the first innings. Healy (18 off 20), once again, failed to hit the straps but Mooney continued her fine run with the bat.
In another big game, Mooney played a match-winning knock of 74 runs in 53 balls on a track that wasn’t the easiest to bat on. Wickets kept falling at the other end but Mooney made sure she kept the scoreboard ticking.
Mooney and Gardner added 46 runs for the second wicket before the latter got out off Chloe Tyron. Garner played a handy knock of 29 runs in 21 balls but she failed to convert the start into a big score.
The likes of Grace Harris (10), Lanning (10), and Ellyse Perry (7) also got out cheaply but Mooney’s brilliance with the bat meant Australia reached a fighting total in the end.
As for South Africa’s bowling unit, the likes of Ismail (2 for 26) and Kapp (2 for 35) once again were brilliant with the ball.
A sluggish performance in power play cost SA the match
But a 157-run target was always going to be a big one for South Africa. And a slow start in the powerplay made it more difficult for them.
At the end of the first five overs, South Africa had only managed to score 17 runs on the board for the loss Brits (10). Much like Mooney, Laura Wolvaardt also kept the team in the hunt with a fighting knock of 61 runs in 48 deliveries.
But she lacked support at the other end. Kapp made run-a-ball 11, while the skipper, Sune Luus (2) departed only after facing her fifth ball. In the end, the Proteas fell 19 runs short of the target.
The Australians, once again, were superb with the ball. As many as four cricketers picked one wicket each.
