CPL 2023: Defending champions Jamaica Tallawahs have traded Rovman Powell to Barbados Royals. Powell, who led Tallahwahs to their 3rd CPL title and is currently West Indies’ T20I captain, can likely be a contender for leading the Royals in CPL 2023.
The trade also involves leg-spinner Hayden Walsh Jr to join Tallawahs from the Royals. Walsh Jr. was named Player of the Tournament in the 2019 edition of CPL playing for Barbados. He then joined Indian Premier League (IPL) as a net bowler with Rajasthan Royals franchise.
Confirming the news on Instagram, Powell posted, “It is with a heavy heart that my time with the Tallawahs has come to an end. I have made life-long friends and memories I will never forget. Not least winning two CPL titles for my home franchise, one of those as CAPTAIN, which I will always cherish. I’m looking forward to joining the Royals and beginning a new chapter of my CPL career. I would like to thank all the players and coaches who have been part of my Tallawahs journey these last few years. Most of all, I want to thank the Jamaican fans, for your support.”

Powell’s departure from Tallawahs adds to the list of local explosive players such as Chris Gayle and Andre Russell who have also left the team.
Gayle’s association with the Tallawahs concluded in April 2020 after a contentious fallout with Ramnaresh Sarwan, who was serving as the assistant coach for the franchise during that time. Likewise, Russel also left Tallawahs to join Trinbago Knight Riders for the last season after having a fallout with the franchise.
CPL 2023 to begin on August 17
CPL 2023 will begin from August 17 to September 24 and will take place across five countries across the Caribbean excluding Jamaica. The fixtures of the tournament is such that it is again going to clash with other international cricket fixtures including The Hundred tournament.
The Hundred tournament will take place from August 1-27 this year. Trinbago Knight Riders spinner Sunil Narine is the only West Indies player to feature in both CPL as well as The Hundred. Narine plays for Oval Invincibles and is expected to play the initial five matches for the side before departing for CPL.
