On Day 2 of the second Test match between Australia and South Africa, David Warner smashed several records in his 100th Test. He became only the second player in the history of the game to smash a century in his 100th match, both in Test and ODI, after scoring a double century.
David Warner ended a dry spell of nearly three years without scoring a century in a Test match by scoring a double during a rollicking inning against South Africa at the MCG. Warner is the 10th man in Test history to score a century in his 100th Test, and the second man to score a double. Warner is also only the eighth Australian to breach the mark of 8000 runs in Test cricket.
David Warner joins the elite club of the double century in the Test
As a result of scoring his 25th century in a Test match and his third double century in a Test match, he joined an elite group of players who had previously reached this milestone. He also became just the second Australian player to do so, following Ricky Ponting, who is the only player to score twin hundreds in his 100th Test. Only Joe Root was able to score a 200 on his 100th test, making him the only other player to do so.
Warner also became only the second player, after Gordon Greenidge, to score a century in both his 100th One-Day International and his 100th Test. Additionally, during the course of his innings, Warner became the eighth Australian to pass 8000 runs in a Test match.
He had promised before the match to get back to his old self and take the attack to South Africa’s bowlers, and he did just that, hitting his first Test century since January 2020 and snapping a string of 27 innings in which he had not scored a hundred.
In addition to that, he scored a score of 50 or more in a Test match for the first time in 11 innings since his previous half-century, which he scored in Lahore earlier this year. It was only his second century in international competition across all formats since January 2020. He scored his only other international century at the MCG in a one-day international against England back in November.
