Promising Sri Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has achieved an exemplary milestone in his career as he has become the fastest spinner to claim 50 Test wickets in the history of the format. Jayasuriya acclaimed the feat in the second Test match against Ireland as he completed his 50th wicket in only seven Test matches.
Notably, Prabath Jayasuriya has broken a 71-year-long record set by West Indies spinner Alf Valentine. Alf is the previous record-holder who claimed 50 wickets in only 8 Test matches. Jayasuriya scripted history after he grabbed the wicket of Ireland’s Paul Stirling on the final day of the second Test match at Galle.

The 31-year-old Prabhat Jayasuriya now joins the likes of South African paceman Vernon Philander and English pacer Tom Richardson who also chipped 50 wickets in seven Test matches. Australia’s Charlie Turner still remains the fastest bowler to scalp 50 Test wickets as he reached the landmark in only 6 Test matches. Turner had set the record back in 1888 and nobody has been able to break the feat in 135 years.
Prabhat Jayasuriya has been in absolutely magnificent form since his debut. He has been instrumental in shaping Sri Lanka’s fortune in Test cricket as his five-wicket haul against the heavyweight Australian side helped them to record a victory over the mighty side. In his just-begun career, Jayasuriya has claimed four five-wicket hauls and has already claimed the 19th position in the Men’s Test Bowler Rankings.
Coming to the Test match between Sri Lanka and Ireland, the heroics of Prabhat Jayasuriya (5/174), Ramesh Mendis (5/64), Kusal Mendis (245) and Nishan Madushka (205) helped the hosts to clinch a solid 10-runs victory and seize the series by 2-0. Sri Lanka had posted a rock-solid 704/3 runs total in their first innings and bowled out Ireland for 492 & 202 respectively.
