A significant rise in complaints against celebrities for violating advertising regulations has been noticed by the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI), the self-regulatory authority for the advertising industry. A remarkable 803 % increase in complaints was seen in the financial year 2023, reaching 503 advertisements as compared to 55 the year before.
The Consumer Protection Act demands celebrities who participate in advertising provide proof of their diligence, but ASCI’s analysis indicates this is not always the case. Surprisingly, in 97 per cent of celebrity-related instances that ASCI analysed, no proof of proper investigation was shown.
Other Celebrities Found Violating ASCI Rules
MS Dhoni tops ASCI’s list of famous individuals who have disregarded required due diligence, committing more than 10 violations. Bhuvan Bam, a popular YouTuber and actor-comedian has seven cases of non-compliance listed against him.
The ASCI investigation also lists the industries that generate the most prohibited content. The primary violative categories, which account for more than half of the problematic stuff, appear to include gaming, traditional education, healthcare, and personal care.
It’s important to remember that MS Dhoni had been involved in a dispute over a commercial in 2013. By showing himself as Lord Vishnu in a business magazine, the former India captain was charged with hurting Hindus’ sacred feelings. In the campaign, Dhoni was seen carrying goods from the companies he endorsed, including a pair of shoes, in several hands. However, in 2016, the Supreme Court rejected the appeal.
CSK is currently placed 2nd in the IPL 2023 Points Table with High Chances of Qualifying for Playoffs
Aside from that, MS Dhoni’s outstanding performance in the current IPL 2023 has drawn notice. Dhoni has scored 98 runs from 13 games. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is placed 2nd in the IPL 2023 Points Table owing to Dhoni’s spectacular captaincy. With seven wins and a draw from 13 games, CSK has a total of 15 points. CSK will play the last match against Delhi Capitals on Saturday (May 20) at Arun Jaitley Stadium.
The ad industry anticipates for celebrities to show a more responsible stance to ensure adherence to advertising standards as ASCI keeps bringing attention to the rising violations by celebrities in advertisements.
