Former England skipper and batter Joe Root has dethroned Australia’s cricketing stars to claim the No. 1 position in the latest edition of International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s Test Rankings for batters. Root edged past Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne to claim the top spot.
Joe Root was instrumental in England’s decent batting performance in the first Ashes Test against Australia. Unfortunately, his efforts were unsuccessful as Pat Cummins paved the way and led his side to a clinical victory by anchoring a phenomenal run chase.
The latest edition of the ICC Test Rankings witnessed Joe Root jumping five places to claim the top position amongst the batsmen. Root has 887 rating points against his name in the red-ball format. Root scored a heroic 118-run knock in the first innings of the Test match followed by a decent 46-run knock in the second innings. Bringing his 30th Test century, Root climbed to yet another feat in his sizzling career.
Marnus Labuschgne loses his No.1 spot in ICC Men’s Test rankings for batters
Former No. 1 Test batsman Marnus Labuschagne slipped two positions to fall to the third position after a string of low scores in the first Test. Labuschagne got out on a golden duck in the first innings. Kane Williamson etched 6 rating points and overtook Marnus into second position.
Australian veteran Steve Smith has unfortunately slipped to the sixth position after a shaky show in the last few Test matches. He is now beneath Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, who is in the No. 4 position with 861 rating points under his tally. Mighty Travis Head is in the fourth position with 873 rating points.
Meanwhile, Indian run machine Virat Kohli lost one spot and moved to 14th in the Test rankings. England’s Harry Brook edged past Kohli onto the 13th position after a couple of steady knocks (32,46) in the first Ashes Test match.
